'In the Afterburn' is Aaron Robey’s second poetry book, featuring 23 poems and 30 film photographs. Most of the work was completed after a year of living with the COVID-19 pandemic and facing the reality of a world that will never be the same. After self-publishing his first poetry book, from my four walls, which chronicled his experience of entering lock downs the day after a devastating break up, Robey sought to find the treatments for his emotional and physical wounds in the wilderness of the Southwest.
Throughout many trips to desolate canyons, dense forests, and wide open deserts, he captured the disastrous effects of climate change and the beauty that returns when Mother Nature finds a way to persevere. Robey’s vulnerability and rugged optimism showcases how we all can extinguish personal fires and heal ourselves, while the world around us continues to burn.
Aaron Robey (Phillips) primarily works as a Physician Assistant, working in sexual health, LGBTQIA+ healthcare, and HIV research in West Hollywood, California. During graduate school, he found an escape from textbooks and depression through poetry, digital drawing, and film photography.
Robey enjoys spending his free time in nature, capturing landscapes, discovering new species, and taking photographs of wildflowers with his point-and-shoot 35mm camera. His work was first published by The Luna Collective in 2022 and has been featured in Vox, High Country News, Yale’s creative journal “Murmurs”, and Bullshit Lit. Robey lives in Silverlake and Joshua Tree with his partner and muse, Miles.
